Why Clean Your Roof ?
A clean roof doesn’t just improve the appearance of your property there are also practical reasons to keep your roof clean.
Cleaning your roof is important for a number of reasons, including:
Moss
- The moss dropping off of the roof often causes gutters, downpipes and drains to be blocked.
- Moss holds a considerable amount of water, keeping your roof damp and cold in winter months.
- Water absorbed by the moss freezes and the expansion of the ice can cause tiles to crack.
- The water absorbed by the moss puts extra weight on the roof.
Lichen & Mould
Reduced mould exposure: Cleaning your roof can protect your family from exposure to mould. Lichen is common on roofs and is a type of bacteria build up. It grows like any kind of mould and is unsanitary for your property.

Sussex Roof Cleaning Q&A
How often should I have my roof cleaned ?
Once a deep clean has been carried out by Grime Army, a cheaper maintenance clean can be carried out to keep the roof in tip top shape. This is done by applying either a SoftWash or biocide treatment.
The frequency of this type of clean will typically be 3to5 years depending on the surroundings such as nearby trees, whether or not the roof staying in the dark etc.
What are the benefits of having my roof cleaned ?
One of the best benefits of roof cleaning is that it can actually extend the life of your roof. A clean roof is less likely to develop leaks and other problems, which means it will last longer. In addition, when you have your roof cleaned regularly, you can catch problems early, before they cause serious damage.
My roof is dirty but with no moss, is there a cheaper way to clean it ?
If there is little to no moss we can use either a SoftWash solution or biocide solution to clean the roof.
What is the difference between SoftWash application or Biocide Application ?
There are positive and negative for both types of roof cleaning chemicals.
SoftWash Positive
The SoftWash solution gives a rapid result that you can see on the day.
Softwash Application Negative
The solution is strong and cannot be used in areas of high passing traffic, high winds, roofs with lots of lead, areas where plants cant be covered up or fed. Areas where tarmac would be exposed to the solution.
Biocide Application Positive
Long lasting and safer to use.
Biocide Application Negative
More expensive than SoftWash.
Weathering needed to help the cleaning process, results can take up to 6 months.
Will you walk on my roof ?
We have use towers and long reach poles and other equipment to ensure the roof is not walked on. This is to avoid any damage to tiles but also for safety. If a contractor says he can do the job cheaper buy using a normal pressure washer and standing on the roof, just remember if someone falls on your property, you can be liable.
Is roof cleaning messy ?
The honest answer is that it is often amazing home much moss is actually on the roof. Pressure washing the roof can cause a mess while in the process but we have all the equipment to ensure that all areas are left as before, if not cleaner than when we started.
Why should I not chose the cheapest option when getting my roof cleaned ?
As with everything you get what you pay for. A roof cleaning professional want to leave you with the most thorough clean. We always use a SoftWash or biocide chemical to finish off the roof clean. If the surface is just pressure washed or just scraped, then all of the bacteria and funky stuff that was there before will start to grow again at the very next chance. Our procedure for roof cleaning will give you a clean roof that will last.
